Free School Meals (FSM) – Important Changes from September 2026
From September 2026, there will be important changes to how Free School Meals (FSM) eligibility is assessed.
Transitional protections currently in place will end in July 2026. This means that all families will need to meet the eligibility criteria to continue receiving Free School Meals.
There will be two categories of FSM:
- Targeted FSM – for families receiving Universal Credit with annual earnings of £7,400 or less. Pupils eligible under this category will also attract Pupil Premium funding for the school.
- Expanded FSM – for families receiving Universal Credit who do not meet the earnings threshold above.
Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will continue to receive Universal Infant Free School Meals regardless of income. However, it is still important that eligible families apply, as this helps the school receive additional funding.
