Vision

  • Vision: At Oldfield Brow, our vision is for all learners to become inquisitive, creative and confident mathematicians who recognise the beauty of mathematics and how it is applicable in their lives and the lives of others.
  • Intent and Implementation: To achieve our vision, we will ensure that our curriculum and teaching approaches embed mathematical fluency alongside a deep understanding of mathematical concepts to empower our learners to work with flexibility.
  • Impact: We will know that we have achieved our vision when our learners can apply creative and efficient approaches to solving of mathematical problems and confidently articulate their reasoning.

To achieve our vision, we follow the NCETM Curriculum, which follows the five big ideas of mathematics mastery.

Mathematical Fluency

At Oldfield Brow, we aim to ensure that every child becomes a true master of mathematics.  A key part of our ‘mastery’ approach to teaching and learning focuses on developing our children’s fluency in both recall and flexibility in the application of numbers across the entire curriculum.  To support our learners in developing the number sense required to achieve our vision of mastery mathematicians, we have developed a specific curriculum that focuses on the development of our children’s conceptual understanding of ‘number’ and its application across the curriculum. We particularly focus on ensuring that our learners can both rapidly recall number facts as well as select the most efficient strategy for calculation, both on their own and when needed across the wider mathematics curriculum.

Fluency is taught explicitly four times a week in fifteen-minute 'Building Blocks' sessions.  Below are the curriculum progression documents detailing to content of these lessons:
