21.10.22 - Half-Term Sponsored Read

To celebrate and encourage a lifelong love of reading at home and school, we are running a sponsored read over half term 22/10/22-30/10/22.

The project is being organised in conjunction with our local Usborne Partner, and all the money raised will go towards brand new books for our school. In addition to the sponsorship money, Usborne will also donate up to 60% of the total raised in EXTRA FREE BOOKS to the school. So, for every £600 raised, we will get an extra £360 in FREE Usborne books!

We always aim to beat our last year’s target which was £1000 in sponsor money with Usborne donating an additional £600 of books for free if our target is met. This will give us a total of £1600 to spend on new books and resources for our children.

Please help us to enhance our reading resources for pupils by encouraging your child to spend a small amount of time each day either reading to themselves, to others, or being read to. They can read books, comics, magazines, newspapers, menus, websites, recipes, poems, leaflets, instructions – anything with words!  For younger children in EYFS they can listen to the adult read their books and that still counts.

The class who have the most recorded minutes will win an extra free book and a small treat! All children will receive a certificate for taking part.

If you are able to support our sponsored read, please find on the reverse a sponsorship form and an extra reading log for your child if they wish to use it to record their reading.  Please send any money in a named envelope with the class name and the amount raised alongside the forms by Friday 4th November.

We have been busy continuing our English topic on Fairy Tales this week creating 'All about me profiles' for a villain from a fairy tale. There were some fabulous profiles created!

We are learning all about the Stoneage in History and our Guided Reading book is Stoneage Boy. 3VT have enjoyed reading the story and using their VIPERS skills to predict what will happen in the story.

The children have also enjoyed an assembly on International Day of the Girl Child where we learnt about Malala Yousafzai.

Homework this week is Maths and 10 Minute Writes. The slides for the 10 minute writes are in the downloads section below.

We hope you have a great weekend.

Monday 10th October 2022

What a busy few weeks we have had in 3VT!

We have been reading 'How to Wash a Wooly Mammoth' in our Guided Reading lessons and really working hard at using our VIPERS.

We have helped Miss Drabble with the design of our new garden area. We produced a lovely planter design to help us with our Science topics.

The children are really progressing in their swimming lessons.

We had a great time collecting facts on teh Stoneage and sharing them with our partners in History. There were some fabulous pieces of research produced!

Here's to another exciting week in Year 3!

Friday 30th September 2022

What a fabulous week we have had in 3VT!

We have been using water colours in our art lessons to create Secondary colours using Primary colours. We have even applied these skills to some exciting art work for you all.

In Science we have been learning about how rocks are fomed and the children learned about being Petrologists (they will be professional Petrologists by half term).

Your input on Padlet has been fantastic, thank you. I have a very full 'To Read' list now!!

Thsi week our homework focus is the 10 minute writes and maths along with spellings. Please look in the downloads section for the 10 minute write pictures.

The children should all have their scores in their homework books.

We look forward to an exciting week ahead focusing on 'Villains' in our writing topic, continuing to discover how rocks are formed (including some exciting experiments) in Science and learning about pulse and rhythm in music.

Monday 12th September 2022

Spellings were uploaded to the children's Spelling Shed accounts on Friday and we ask they practice as much as possible in time for their test next Friday. We have carried out a short assessment to allocate spellings, however, groupings will continue to be monitored moving forward. The children will bring home a paper copy of their spellings at the back of their 10 Minute Write books (more information on that starting next week). Our preference is to use Spelling Shed to practice spellings.  If you have any queries or need a reminder of logins, please email 3vt@oldfield-brow.com

On Tuesday , the children will begin swimming lessons as part of the Year 3 P.E curriculum. Please come to school in normal school uniform. Each child will need a towel and swimming costume/trunks (no board shorts are permitted). Goggles/hairbrushes are optional and swimming hats/arm bands/floats will be provided. PLEASE can children with long hair tie it up in a bun/plaits, to help with putting on hats before and changing times after, their lesson.

It has been wonderful to get to know our new class this week and we are looking forward to working hard and enjoying our learning as we navigate our way through the first year of the juniors

Friday 8th September 2022

Today we spent some time talking and understanding a little more about the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Year 3LP and Year 3VT watched a Newsround programme dedicated to the story and asked/answered questions we had afterwards.

Spellings have been uploaded to the children's Spelling Shed accounts today and we ask they practice as much as possible in time for their test next Friday. We have carried out a short assessment to allocate spellings, however, groupings will continue to be monitored moving forward. They will also be bringing home a spellings book with a copy of the spellings in to practice.

It has been wonderful to get to know our new class this week and we are looking forward to working hard and enjoying our learning as we navigate our way through the first year of the juniors! We have been impressed with how well they have adapted to the new Key Stage!

Enjoy a lovely weekend,

Mrs Timson, Mrs Canham and Mrs Smith

Wednesday 7th September

What a super settling in day our new Year 3s have had! We have been learning about our new routines, getting to know one another and looking at our expectations for the months ahead.

The biggest change to the children's routine today was their later lunch time. Some became hungry before lunch time so in an effort to hopefully combat this in the future, please send your child in with a healthy snack for morning break - we are unfortunately unable to provide fruit for all in the same manner as KS1.

If you have any questions moving forward, please email 3vt@oldfield-brow.com

Mrs Timson, Mrs Smith, Mrs Canham
