Welcome to Oldfield Brow Class F.

Who’s Who in Class F?

Within Class E are the Year 5 & 6 children. The class teacher is Mrs Timmins, who is also the Deputy Headteacher and Mrs Wood who is the teaching assistant. On a Wednesday afternoon a new teacher, Miss Thornton, teaches ICT, music and PE.

There are also two support teachers who work in the classroom at different times throughout the week. These are Mrs Colwell and Mrs Feeney.

Throughout the week various specialists also teach the children. On a Thursday Mme. Butcher teaches French. On a Tuesday Miss Mayo teaches music and drama. Also on a Tuesday the children are taught art by Ms Stirling and Ms Nettle.

What do we learn in Class F?

The curriculum follows the National Curriculum for all subjects but the children are grouped according to ability across the joint age range and therefore each child’s individual needs are met.

In Numeracy the ABACUS maths scheme is the main focus but this is supplemented with additional material and on-line resources.

In Literacy, the Trafford scheme is followed alongside the government’s exemplar planning for Year 6. Many additional resources are used including a spelling programme published by Prim-Ed., two comprehension scheme published by Badger and Oxford. A lot of on-line material is also used, mainly from the Learn Premium website and the BBC revision websites.

Science is a revision and extension of all areas covered lower down the school and includes: light& shadows, forces, electricity, habitats, magnets, micro-organisms, health, plants and materials.

History and Geography units of work alternate each year and include Victorians and World War 2 and local history and water and rivers, maps and the world around us and local geography.

In ICT the children, as well as word processing, learn how to use the internet, set up and interpret databases, use digital cameras and make multi media presentations using Powerpoint.

In RE the children compare and contrast different faiths and examine the multi-cultural world in which we live.

What exams do the year 6 take?

11+ and entrance exams
Trafford is a selective authority which means that to be able to attend certain secondary schools, children must take an 11+ exam or entrance exam for a specific school. Children from Oldfield Brow often take entrance exams for Altrincham Grammar School for Girls and also Altrincham Grammar schools for Boys. Most children take the 11+ exam, which if selected, means that children can attend Sale, Stretford or Urmston Grammar schools. Other schools that the nchildren may attend include Altrincham College of Arts, Wellington School or Knutsford High School.

Many children choosing to take entrance exams begin preparation for them in Year 5.

SATs
All junior children take SATs exams in May, however the SATs in Year 6 are marked externally and the results are published in the form of national league tables of schools. The children’s results are usually used by secondary schools to group the children in Year 7.

How much homework do we get in Class F?

There is homework every night in Class E and should take about ½ an hour. In Year 6 this increases from Easter to the end of SATs. Homework is:

Each week children have a spelling and tables test.

How much fun do we have in class F?

Although it is an extremely hard-working couple of years there are plenty of opportunities for lots of fun. The main highlight in both year groups is the residential visit to Cefn Lea in Wales. This is a wonderful opportunity for all children and they are able to experience: canoeing, abseiling, visits to caves and the beach to name but a few.

There are a number of trips arranged throughout the year, which relate to the topics such as a river investigation at Sale Water Park.

The children in year 6 also get the opportunity to do their cycling proficiency certificates.

What reward systems are there in Class F?

Children get awarded team points for their work. There is also an opportunity to win a prize in the homework raffle! A full week of completed homework and the child receives a raffle ticket, these are then put in a draw at the end of each half term and three winners are chosen.

Children may also receive rewards in the form of certificates and ‘gold’ cards for achieving ‘that little bit extra’ either in their behaviour, attitude or kindness.
