Welcome to Oldfield Brow Class E.
“Tell me, and I forget;
Show me, and I remember;
Let me do and I understand.”
Class E is the second Key Stage Two class at Oldfield Brow Primary School. It is a Year 4/5 class led by class teacher, Mrs Thornton.
Our aim in Class E is to ensure every child reaches their full potential and to this end each child in Class E is encouraged and supported in the development of their independence, both as a learner and as a responsible member of our school community.
Class
E’s curriculum consists of Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Information
Communication Technology, Physical Education, Geography, History, Art, Design
and Technology, Music, Spanish, French and Citizenship. Our curriculum is
designed and delivered so as to make learning a fun, stimulating and engaging
experience for all the children in the class. We use practical activities,
wherever appropriate, and make educational visits a regular feature of the
academic calendar.
A typical day in Class E begins with a short guided reading session. Each group of children engage in reading a book in depth, over an extended period, with the class teacher. This provides opportunities for the children to develop individual reading strategies as well as engaging in discussion about the book, the characters and the author. Following guided reading sessions we have our Literacy Hour which is an enjoyable session the development of key skills in both the reading and writing of English. We write for many different genres through the year. These include: instructions, fiction, reports, play scripts and recounts.
After
break is our dedicated maths lesson, the Numeracy Hour. We follow the Abacus
scheme of work at Oldfield Brow. This scheme has been especially selected
for its potential to allow children to progress at their own individual pace.
The scheme also includes excellent resources for use with the interactive
whiteboard, making ICT a regular feature.
Afternoons are time for Science, ICT and the other Foundation Subjects in Class E. Visit our classroom at this time and you might find we are not there! But don’t worry we are still learning, we could be in the ICT suite using the wonderful new computers to develop our ICT skills or to use the Internet to find information related to our topic work. We could be in the hall with the art specialists, developing our artistic talents. We could be outside learning to play lacrosse or hockey. We could be outside conducting fieldwork for Geography or we might just have left school altogether to go on an educational visit related to the curriculum. If you are lucky enough to find us in the classroom chances are that we are learning to play the ocarina or another musical instrument, learning to speak and write French or Spanish or completing a science investigation.
In Class E every child is valued for the individual contributions they make to our class. As well as our weekly individual “Well Done Certificate” selected by Mrs Breedon. The children also select their class “Star of the Week”. This encourages the children to value and respect each other and to recognise the importance of friendship and inclusion.
