Welcome to Oldfield Brow Class B.

Class B welcomes children to Key Stage One education (infant in old money!!), building on Foundation Stage curriculum achievements gained in Class A and provides a stimulating and inspiring working environment to motive children through their learning.

In Class B we continue to value the importance of structured play and learning through practical experience with areas around the classroom set aside for role play, computer activities, free writing and quiet reading. Children in Year 1 begin to follow a more structured routine with Literacy and Numeracy hours completed in the morning and foundation topic work completed in the afternoon.

The importance of home-school links fostered by Oldfield Brow continue in Class B and parents are welcome to come and work in class with their child, discuss their child’s progress with the teacher and regular communications are sustained with each child’s reading record and homework comments.

In Literacy we follow the National Literacy Strategy objectives, developing understanding of fiction, non-fiction and poetry reading and writing. Children in Class B steadily become more independent workers, developing their written skills through their growing understanding of spelling, vocabulary, punctuation and sentence composition.

In Numeracy we follow the Abacus Evolve scheme of work, completing fun practical maths activities as a class, on the interactive whiteboard and in groups and then enjoy recording our learning in attractive Numeracy workbooks. Children develop their understanding of numbers to 100, working with ordering, addition and subtraction. We associate our understanding of numbers to work on money. We also complete shape and measures activities and enjoy sorting and finding shapes around the room and exploring capacity in the water tray.

In the afternoon Class B completes lessons in Science, History, Geography, Art, Design and Technology, Music, ICT, Religious Education (RE) and Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE). Cross curricular links are made throughout learning areas to aid children’s understanding and progression.
