Welcome to Oldfield Brow Reception Class.
In
the reception class our main aim is to make the children feel happy about
coming to school and encourage the children to be interested, excited and
motivated to learn. The children are taught school routines and the importance
of sharing and playing co-operatively.
In Class A well planned play and practical activities are the key ways in
which children learn. The children are given the opportunity to explore the
curriculum through; playing, talking, reflecting, repeating, and experimenting.
During the reception year the children work towards the early learning goals
which are divided into six areas of learning;
- Personal, social and emotional development
- Communication, language and literacy
- Mathematical development
- Creative development
- Physical development
- Knowledge and Understanding of the world
The day is more structured in reception and the children begin to take part in the daily literacy and numeracy lessons. In literacy there are many opportunities for developing speaking and listening skills during discussion sessions, singing and stories. Children are introduced to the school reading scheme and are taught to recognise and write simple words.
In mathematics we introduce activities practically. The children are taught
to recognise numbers to ten and beyond d and to work towards addition and
subtraction sums. We talk about and introduce simple patterns and encourage
the children to use mathematical ideas and methods to solve practical problems.
The reception class is staffed by a qualified teacher and a full time teaching
assistant. Our reception children take part in the weekly showing assemblies
as an opportunity to show what they have been learning. We aim to build on
the excellent foundations laid down by the Nursery to ensure that when children
enter Year 1 they are well prepared and confident to do their best.
